West Virginia was the 35th state admitted to the United States in 1863. The state’s nickname “The Mountain State” refers to the Appalachian Mountains that extend through the eastern part of the state. Over 70% of West Virginia is covered by forest. West Virginia was one of the first states to drill for oil.
West Virginia borders Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Charleston is the state capital and the largest city. Coal mining is one of the main industries contributing to the state’s economy.
Greenbrier County is one of 55 counties in West Virginia, and is the second largest county in West Virginia, with 1021 square miles and was created in March of 1778 from portions of Montgomery and Botetourt counties (Virginia) and was named for its primary river.
